So you're a mum running a business?

Let’s face it, being a mum and running a business is no small feat. You’re juggling family dinners, school runs, emails, and client calls—all while trying to grow your dream. It’s a lot, but you’re not alone. Many women feel the same push and pull between family life and entrepreneurship. The good news? With a few practical strategies and mindset shifts, you can find harmony between your roles and build a brand that feels authentic and sustainable.

Set Clear Boundaries

When you're both a mum and a business owner, it’s easy for the lines to blur. One minute you’re prepping dinner, and the next, you’re replying to client emails or taking a call. Setting boundaries is key to protecting your time and energy.

  • Create Work Hours: Define when you’re in “work mode” and when you’re in “family mode.” Share your schedule with your family and clients to set expectations.
  • Designate a Workspace: Whether it’s a home office or the corner of a dining table, having a specific spot for work helps separate business from home life.
  • Learn to Say No: It’s okay to decline opportunities or social engagements that don’t align with your priorities.

Prioritise Time Management

Time is your most valuable resource, so it’s important to use it wisely.

  • Plan Ahead: Use a planner or digital calendar to map out your week. Include both business tasks and family activities to get a clear view of your commitments. I use Google calendar and also write down details in my diary so I miss nothing.
  • Batch Tasks: Group similar tasks together—like writing emails, creating content, or scheduling social media posts—to work more efficiently.
  • Embrace Delegation: Whether it’s outsourcing the house cleaning, the laundry or hiring a virtual assistant to do your content creation, letting go of smaller tasks frees you up for what matters most.

Build a Brand That Reflects You

Your business should feel like an extension of who you are. Building an authentic brand makes it easier to connect with your audience and stay passionate about your work.

  • Define Your Why: Why did you start your business? Who are you helping? Keeping this at the forefront will guide your decisions and keep you motivated.
  • Show Your Personality: This is what I teach all my personal branding clients. People connect with people. Share your story, values, and behind-the-scenes moments to build trust and relatability.
  • Keep It Simple: You don’t have to do everything. Focus on a few platforms or strategies that work best for you and your audience. When you overcommit nothing gets done well.

Practice Self-Care Without Guilt

As a mum and business owner, it’s easy to put yourself last. But prioritising your well-being isn’t selfish...it’s essential.

  • Schedule Me-Time: Block out time for activities that recharge you, whether it’s exercise, reading, or a coffee with friends. I find getting up before everyone else gives me the time I need to recharge and then I am able to be the best version of me for both my family and my business.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge your progress, even if it feels minor. Every step forward counts. This one is important to keep you on track and seeing the bigger picture.
  • Let Go of Perfection: Done is better than perfect. Give yourself grace and remember that balance doesn’t mean perfection...it’s about what works for you and your family.

Leverage Support Systems

You don’t have to do it all alone. Lean on the people and resources around you to lighten the load.

  • Family and Friends: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s needing support with the children in school holidays (yes I am in the midst of this right now) or someone to vent to, your support system is there for you.
  • Networking Groups: Join communities of like-minded women who understand the challenges of running a business while raising a family. You’ll find inspiration, advice, and maybe even collaboration opportunities.
  • Professional Help: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider hiring a coach or joining a mastermind to get clarity and support. I will always work with a coach...if I don't have accountability it is too easy to fall back on old habits.

Balancing family life and building a business isn’t always easy, but it’s absolutely doable with the right strategies and mindset. Remember, you don’t have to have it all figured out—progress, not perfection, is the goal. By setting boundaries, managing your time, building an authentic brand, and leaning on support, you can create a life and business you love. You’ve got this, and I’m here cheering you on every step of the way!
