Romantic sunset photoshoot on a grassy hillside with soft golden hour lighting.
A series of candid photos showing someone in a white shirt and suspenders looking at and reacting to something off camera.
A romantic beach proposal scene at sunset with an expectant couple in flowing beige attire on sandy dunes.

North Burleigh was doing what North Burleigh always does.

It was busy, windy, people everywhere and for a random afternoon that wasn’t even a weekend, it felt like half the Gold Coast had decided to show up. There were multiple photographers shooting at the same time, families moving in and out of frames, people stopping to watch, people not stopping to watch and just a lot going on.

Which, if you’ve ever done a photoshoot at North Burleigh, will sound very familiar.

This couple had booked me for a maternity session after we met at a wedding I photographed on Tamborine Mountain. We connected easily on the day, had one of those relaxed chats you sometimes have at weddings, and later they reached out to book their own session. The plan was simple. A maternity shoot on the Gold Coast. Nothing styled or overthought. Just documenting this stage of their lives before their baby arrived.

What I was absolutely not expecting was a proposal.

To really set the scene properly, there were at least four other family sessions happening nearby at the same time...and for reasons I still don’t fully understand, there was also a semi-naked man flexing in tight white underwear for another photographer a few metres away.

Genuinely strange vibes.

Very North Burleigh energy.

We were already navigating wind, crowds and constantly shifting backgrounds when I was photographing the two of them together and... without any warning at all, he dropped down on one knee.

No heads up.

No secret message beforehand.

Nothing.

I honestly think I was more surprised than his girlfriend.

There was a split second where my brain completely stalled and then instinct kicked in and I just kept shooting. There was no time to move people, no time to think about whether the background was clean, no time to wait for the beach to magically clear.

This was not a styled moment. It was fast, raw and completely unexpected.

Her reaction was everything at once. Shock, laughter, tears, disbelief. And somehow, despite the chaos around us, there was this small pocket of space where it was just the two of them having a life-changing moment in the middle of a very ordinary, hectic afternoon.

This session is a really good example of what real maternity and engagement photography on the Gold Coast actually looks like when you’re working in busy beach locations like North Burleigh. Real life doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. Big moments don’t pause because the light isn’t ideal or because someone is doing something weird in the background.

They just happen.

And this is why experience matters. Knowing how to stay present, keep shooting and adapt when plans change or completely fall apart is part of the job. You don’t get to ask people to redo moments like this.

They’ll never remember how windy it was, how busy the beach felt, or how chaotic the afternoon actually was. What they’ll remember is that moment. And now they have photos of it.

North Burleigh can absolutely work for maternity sessions and engagement photos, but it’s not a soft or quiet location. It’s exposed, it’s busy and it has a lot going on most of the time. It suits couples who are happy to roll with things rather than control every detail.

If you want empty beaches and stillness, I’ll always suggest other locations, especially on the Tweed Coast. But if you want something real, energetic and very Gold Coast, North Burleigh delivers exactly that.

This session started as a maternity shoot and turned into an engagement without warning, in less than ideal conditions, on a hectic afternoon that honestly could have gone either way.

And it’s one I’ll always remember.
