Every woman who books a branding session asks me the same question...."What should I wear?"
And every time, my answer is the same - I don't know yet. Let's talk first.
Because what you wear to your branding session has nothing to do with what's hanging in your wardrobe and everything to do with who is sitting across from your ideal client when they open your website.
Why I Jump on a Call Before We Talk Outfits
Before every signature branding session I offer a complimentary fifteen minute phone call. Not to go through logistics. Not to talk about packages. To talk about your business. Who are your clients? How do you want them to feel when they find you? What's the first impression you're going for - warm and approachable, bold and authoritative, creative and a little unexpected?
Because here's the thing. If you are a naturopath whose whole brand is about gentle, holistic healing and you show up in a sharp corporate blazer, something is going to feel off. Not because the blazer isn't beautiful - but because it sends a message that doesn't match what your client is looking for when they come to you.
And if you run a tutoring business and you love working with kids and families, you are sure as hell not showing up in full corporate wear. Think teacher energy. Warm. Approachable. A fun print dress. Something a parent would see and immediately think - yes, I trust her with my child.
Your outfit is part of your brand message. It needs to match the story you're telling before you've said a single word.
The Four Outfit Framework
For my signature branding sessions and the Ultimate production - which include multiple outfit changes and setups - I ask every client to bring at least four looks. Here's how I explain them:
Outfit One: Lunch with your girlfriends
Casual but cute. This is you relaxed and off-duty but still put together. A flowy dress, a cute top with jeans, something you'd throw on for a Saturday catch up that makes you feel good without trying too hard. This outfit gives us images that feel warm, real and relatable -- the ones that work beautifully on Instagram and in the "about me" section of your website where you want people to feel like they already know you.
Outfit Two: Speaking on stage
Imagine you're standing in front of a room full of your ideal clients. What are you wearing? This is your most intentional, on-brand outfit - and this is where your brand colours come in. If you want to be seen as bold, this might be red or hot pink. If your brand is earthy and grounded, think warm neutrals and textures. If you're fun and creative, bring the colour. This outfit gives us your power shots - the ones that go on your homepage, your speaker profile, your LinkedIn header.
Outfit Three: The fun one
This is the outfit you pull out of the bag and go "I don't even know where I'd wear this." A party dress. Sequins. Bold heels. Balloons if you want them. Something that makes you feel a little bit electric. These shots are the ones that stop the scroll. They're unexpected, they show personality, and they're often the images clients end up loving most even though they were the most nervous about shooting them. Trust me on this one.
Outfit Four: Your world
This one is specific to what you actually do. If you're a yoga teacher, bring your favourite activewear. If you're a chef or food stylist, think about what you'd wear in your element. A business coach might bring something that feels like a working day - relaxed but professional. A creative might bring something that reflects their aesthetic. This isn't about being daggy or unstylish - it's about being recognisably, authentically you in the context of your work. These images have a specific job to do and they do it really well.
Don't Forget the Details
This is the bit people forget and then kick themselves about afterwards. Props. Accessories. The little things that make your images feel like you rather than anyone with a camera and a nice outfit.
A fun hat. A second pair of shoes - because shoes change the whole feel of an outfit and take up zero space in a bag. Your favourite coffee cup. A book you love. Flowers. Balloons. A bold bag. Jewellery that means something. If there's an object that's become part of your brand - something you're always photographed with, something your clients associate with you - bring it.
These details are what make someone scroll past a hundred branding galleries and stop at yours. They're also the shots that feel the most like you, because they are. Don't overthink it - just bring the things that make you happy and we'll work out what to do with them when you get here.
A Few Things That Apply to Everyone
Regardless of your industry or your brand, a few things hold across every session:
Fit matters more than price. Something from Kmart that fits you perfectly will always photograph better than a designer piece that doesn't sit right. Get things tailored if you need to. It makes a real difference.
Avoid large logos. They date quickly and distract from your face, which is what people are actually there to see.
Bring options. Even if you think you've nailed your four outfits, throw in a spare. We might fall in love with something unexpected, or something might not photograph the way you imagined.
Nails and details matter. Not because they need to be perfect, but because your hands are in a lot of branding shots and chipped polish is the thing you'll notice every single time you look at an image. A quick tidy before your session is worth it.
Don't buy something completely new that you've never worn. You want to feel like yourself, not like you're playing dress-ups in someone else's clothes. If you buy something new, wear it around the house first. Break it in a little.
The Fifteen Minute Call Changes Everything
I know it might seem easier if I just handed you a list. Wear this, bring that, avoid the other thing. But the women who come out of their sessions with images they genuinely love - the ones who message me weeks later saying they've been using their photos everywhere and keep getting compliments - are almost always the ones who did the call first.
Because once we've talked about who you are, what you do and who you're doing it for, the outfits stop being a guessing game and start being a decision. A deliberate, confident, this-is-exactly-right decision.
