I'm going to say something that might surprise you coming from a photographer. I use AI. Pretty much every week.
It helps me write faster, brainstorm content, organise my thoughts and save hours of admin that would otherwise eat my entire Tuesday. I'm not precious about it and I'm not going to pretend I'm not using it while quietly prompting away behind the scenes.
But there is one place I keep coming back to where AI just doesn't cut it.
Your branding photos.
I Tried It. Here's What Happened.
I was curious, so I did what a lot of people are doing right now. I uploaded some photos of myself and let an AI tool do its thing.
Some of the results were genuinely impressive. Polished. Professional looking. A couple of them could have passed for a decent headshot if you didn't look too closely.
The problem was they didn't look like me.
The hair was slightly off. The skin was too smooth. The expression was almost right -- that uncanny valley thing where something looks fine until it doesn't. And if you met me in person after seeing those images, I reckon you'd do a double take.
As someone who has spent years helping women show up authentically in front of a camera, that gap between the image and the real person is exactly where trust falls apart.
Your Branding Isn't About Looking Perfect
It's about being recognisable.
When someone finds you online -- your website, your Instagram, your LinkedIn - they're already deciding whether they trust you before they've read a single word. And when they meet you in person a week later, that first thought should be "oh, exactly who I expected."
Not "huh, she looks completely different from her photos."
AI can generate a face. It cannot generate you. The way your eyes change when you start talking about something you love. The laugh that happens when you're actually relaxed. The energy you bring into a room that makes people want to work with you.
That's what branding photography is actually capturing. Not your face. You.
The Time Argument Doesn't Add Up
I know the appeal. AI headshots feel cheaper and faster.
But here's what I've watched people actually do: spend an entire week learning prompts, uploading photos, generating hundreds of versions, fixing hands that look wrong, tweaking backgrounds, trying to get an expression that feels natural, and ending up with something they're still not sure about.
Compare that to 45 minutes in a branding session where you walk away with a full gallery of images that are genuinely, unmistakably you.
You're a business owner. Your time has a real dollar value attached to it. Sometimes the free option is the most expensive one you'll ever choose.
What Actually Happens in a Branding Session
The camera is honestly the least important part of what I do.
Before I pick it up I want to know what makes you light up when you talk about your work. Who your dream clients are. What you want people to feel when they land on your website. How you naturally move and laugh and exist when you're not thinking about being photographed.
Because I've spent over twenty years working with people - children, families, women - and the one thing I know for certain is that the best images happen when someone forgets the camera is there. That doesn't happen because of the equipment. It happens because of the conversation we have before I ever press the shutter.
I'm not going to stand you in front of a wall and tell you to smile. I'm going to spend time with you, find out what makes you genuinely light up, and then catch that on camera. There's a difference and you'll see it in your images.
AI Has Its Place - Just Not Here
I want to be really clear: I'm not anti-AI. Not even close.
I think it's one of the most useful tools available to small business owners right now and I'd be a hypocrite to say otherwise given how much I use it myself.
But there's a difference between using AI to support your business and using it to replace your face with a better version of your face. One saves you time. The other creates a version of you that doesn't actually exist - and asks your future clients to trust someone they've never really met.
Your strongest personal brand isn't the most polished one. It's the one people recognise the moment they meet you.
Ready to Actually Show Up as Yourself?
If you're a business owner on the Tweed Coast or Gold Coast who has been putting off proper branding photos - whether because you're not sure you'll feel comfortable, or you've tried AI and something felt off, or you just haven't found the right photographer yet - I'd love to have a chat.
I work with women across Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, Casuarina, Banora Point, Coolangatta, Palm Beach, Burleigh Heads and the broader Gold Coast and Northern NSW.
Easy natural prompts. No pressure to be someone you're not. Just honest, warm images that actually look like you on your best day.
Because your clients aren't buying a perfect photograph. They're buying you. Let's make sure they can see you clearly.
