I've been doing something a little different lately.

For a long time, maternity photography on the Tweed Coast and Gold Coast meant beaches, dunes, golden hour light and hoping the wind didn't have other plans. And honestly? I love all of that. There's something about a pregnant woman in that late afternoon or early morning light that never gets old.

But I've been expanding into studio work, and last weekend I got to put that to the test properly for the first time -- and I want to tell you about it, because it changed the way I think about what a maternity session can be.

How Jessica's Session Came About

I actually photographed Jess last year - a Mother's Day session collaboration between Wonderland Photography and Bop It Tots at Kirra Hill Community Centre. She was one of those clients who just gets it. Easy in front of the camera, warm and genuinely fun to work with - oh and her daughter is Alice - just like my daughter!!

When she reached out to tell me she was pregnant, I was excited for her. And when the conversation turned to maternity photos, I pitched her the studio. She was open to it, which I appreciated, because studio maternity is still something a lot of people don't immediately think of when they picture pregnancy photos on the Tweed Coast.

She said yes. And what we created together was something I'm genuinely proud of.

What's Different About a Studio Maternity Session

Here's what I noticed the moment we started: I could breathe....take my time.

No wind. No checking the weather app every twenty minutes. No walking across soft sand in the heat while trying to keep everyone comfortable. No losing the light because a cloud had other ideas.

Just a controlled space, beautiful light I could shape exactly the way I wanted and a gorgeous pregnant woman who trusted the process!

We played with curtains and the way light filtered through them. We experimented with how shadows fell across her bump. We took our time, tried things, adjusted, tried again. The whole session had this calm, unhurried quality that outdoor sessions - as much as I love them - can't always guarantee.

The result was something I'd describe as whimsical. Soft. A little dreamy. Very different from the bright, airy coastal look I'm known for, and honestly that contrast is what excited me most about it.

Studio vs Outdoor Maternity: Which Is Right for You?

This isn't an either/or conversation, but here's how I'd think about it.

Outdoor maternity suits you if you love natural settings, want movement and location as part of your story, and are comfortable with the unpredictability that comes with shooting outside (and the curious bystanders). The Tweed Coast gives us stunning options - dunes, beaches, hinterland, river banks - and that kind of session has a natural, grounded feel.

Studio maternity suits you if you want something more controlled and intimate. If the idea of posing on a beach feels exposing, the studio removes that. If you're further along in your pregnancy and comfort matters more than a long walk across sand, the studio is genuinely easier on your body. And if you're drawn to something a little more editorial, a little more intentional - light and shadow and fabric and mood - studio gives you that in a way outdoor simply can't.

Some women know immediately which one they want. Others need to talk it through. Either way, I'm happy to have that conversation.

What I'm Building at Wonderland Photography

Studio work is something I've been investing in seriously - new lighting equipment, new furniture, new setups that give us a much wider range of looks than outdoor sessions alone can offer. Jessica's session was a reminder of why that investment matters.

There's a client out there who doesn't want the beach. Who wants something quieter, more controlled, more hers. And I want to be the photographer she finds when she goes looking.

If that's you - whether you're expecting, or you're thinking about newborn or family studio portraits - I'd love to hear from you.
